The procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes to perform. It involves electrically testing these five specific acupuncture points on each ear for pain sensitivity. Then, tiny acupuncture devices called ASP needles, (they look like very small gold earring studs) are inserted into the active pain points on the ears one at a time until the pain level subsides. From extensive clinical experience, I find about 75% success in reducing pain with this method. The ASP needles remain in place for up to 72 hours as they continue to block pain. Interestingly, there seems to be a cumulative effect to this procedure in some patients, often with good duration of pain relief.
